Sendai Yuusha wa Inkyou Shitai is a popular novel that blends Action, Adventure, Comedy and more. Written by the author Iida K. 155 chapters have been translated, and translation of other chapters is in progress.

Synopsis

Three years ago, in the land of Reinbulk, a Legendary Hero was summoned in the Kingdom of Leezalion and he succeeded in repelling the Demon King. Now, five students are summoned back into Reinbulk by the Kingdom of Luxeria to fight against the Demon King and the demon army. Unlike the other heroes, Yashiro Yuu has no magical affinity and the Luxeria Kingdom has no intention on acknowledging his existence or returning him to his world.

However, Yuu is actually the previous Hero that had fought the Demon King. Moreover, he is perplexed at the situation since he knows the Demon King has not returned since he sealed him. If the seal was ever broken then he would be automatically summoned instead of normal summoned. Since he already saved the world once and the Demon King hasn’t been unsealed, Yuu decides to leave the demons to the new heroes and retire from the Hero business. So he decides to become an adventurer.

Editor's Note

💡 This is a classic case of "great premise, questionable execution." The idea of a jaded ex-hero forced out of retirement is gold, and the early mystery is gripping. However, be prepared: the tone lurches from dark fantasy to ecchi slapstick comedy faster than the MC can make a pass at an elf. The novel is unapologetically a "guilty pleasure" for a specific audience: those who enjoy OP MCs, harem tropes, and don't mind if the plot occasionally pauses for a panty joke. If that sounds like you, dive in. If not, the constant tonal whiplash will drive you away.

Experience Curve

Vol. 1 (The Re-summoning Hook): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Peak. The beginning is fantastic. The rejection of the "useless" hero and his cynical view of the world provide a fresh take on the genre. The first few chapters even feature gritty, mature consequences.

Vol. 2 – Ch. 100 (The Slapstick Shift): ⭐⭐⭐ – The Decline. The story shifts heavily into comedy. The introduction of an annoying elf companion who constantly hits the MC for his perverted thoughts slows down the plot significantly.

Ch. 101 – 180 (The Lore & Mystery): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Recovery. The story regains strength as it focuses on Yuu’s past. Discovering the fate of his old party and the mystery of the "new" Demon King adds much-needed emotional weight.

Ch. 181 – Conclusion: ⭐⭐⭐ – The Steady Finish. It settles into a comfortable, if predictable, rhythm of a secret OP hero solving problems while pretending to be a nobody.

WebNovelDB Review

6 /10
Sendai Yuusha suffers from a crippling identity crisis. On one hand, it wants to be a thoughtful exploration of a traumatized veteran dealing with his legacy in a world that's moved on. On the other, it desperately wants to be a raunchy, low-stakes harem comedy where the biggest threat is the female lead's fist connecting with the MC's face. The Good (When It Remembers It): The moments of genuine pathos—reunions with old comrades, flashes of trauma from the previous war—are excellent. They hint at the far better, more serious novel trapped inside. The Exhausting Reality: The majority of the runtime is consumed by a formulaic, repetitive loop: Yuu acts pervy → gets hit → repeat. This isn't character development; it's a sitcom gag on life support. The "annoying loli" companion exists primarily to enable this cycle, and frequent POV shifts disrupt any narrative momentum the main plot manages to build. Verdict: Read this only if your tolerance for early-2000s anime tropes is extremely high. It's the literary equivalent of junk food you're slightly ashamed to enjoy. There's a compelling mystery buried here, but you'll have to dig through a mountain of ecchi filler to find it. For Fans Of: Nostalgia for mid-2000s harem anime, stories where the female lead's primary role is to physically abuse the MC, and OP protagonists who actively avoid the plot. Not For You If: You have zero patience for juvenile sexual humor, need consistent tone or pacing, or believe a hero's retirement should involve more introspection and less peeping.

Key Information

Main Characters: Yashiro Yuu (A walking contradiction: a battle-scarred legend whose defining trait is a juvenile sex drive); Norn (The designated comedy straight-man, whose existence is to punish the MC's libido and occasionally remind him there's a plot).
Power System: Narrative Convenience. The MC is "weak" when the comedy demands it (to get beaten up) and unstoppably OP when the plot remembers he's a legendary hero (to easily solve serious threats).
Themes: The Incompatibility of Trauma and Titillation, The Burden of Fame (when not being used for a gag), Running Away from Responsibility (and into the women's bath).
