The Founder of Diabolism is a popular novel that blends Adventure, Drama, Mystery and more. Written by the author Mò Xiāng Tóngxiù. A total of 127 chapters have been translated and the novel is complete.

Synopsis

As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.
Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?
But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.
A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

Editor's Note

💡 The "Unreliable Narrator" of History.
The most brilliant aspect of The Founder of Diabolism is how it handles reputation vs. reality. When Wei Wuxian is resurrected, the world remembers him as a bloodthirsty, power-hungry tyrant. The reader, however, sees a man who is essentially a "homeless" soul, trying to find a decent meal and avoid dogs.

The story forces you to reconcile the "Yiling Patriarch" (the terrifying legend) with the "Wei Wuxian" (the boy who just wanted to protect the weak). It’s a scathing critique of how "righteous" society creates its own monsters to justify its own violence.

Why it sticks with you:
The Flashback Structure: MXTX uses flashbacks not just for exposition, but for emotional devastation. You’ll be laughing at a joke in the present, only to be hit with a memory of the same characters 13 years ago when they were whole and happy. It makes the "present" feel heavy with the weight of ghosts.

The Silence of Lan Wangji: Lan Zhan is the ultimate exercise in "Show, Don't Tell." Because he barely speaks, the author forces you to look at his actions: the 13 years of mourning, the 33 whip scars on his back, and the fact that he is the only one who recognizes Wei Wuxian instantly—not by his face, but by a song.

The "Grey" Villains: You will find yourself accidentally sympathizing with characters you should hate. The tragedy isn't just that people died; it's that almost every character was a victim of a rigid, unforgiving system before they became a perpetrator.

"A story that proves the loudest person in the room is often the loneliest, and the quietest person is often the most devoted."

Experience Curve

Ch. 1–30 (The Mystery Begins): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Hook. The mystery of the "Left Arm" is genuinely engaging. The contrast between Wei Wuxian's "shameless" new persona and the stoic Lan Wangji creates instant chemistry.

Ch. 31–70 (The Sunshot Campaign Flashbacks): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Tragedy. This is the core of the novel. The transition from the "happy school days" to the brutal war against the Wen Clan is heart-wrenching. You see exactly how a bright, talented boy is forced into becoming a "Dark Lord."

Ch. 71–110 (Unraveling the Truth): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Investigation. The threads from the past and present merge. The political machinations of the cultivation world are exposed, showing that those who claim to be "righteous" are often the most corrupt.

Ch. 111–127 (Ending & Extras): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Payoff. The romance concludes with one of the most satisfying slow-burn payoffs in the genre. The extras provide much-needed fluff and "Everyday means Everyday" spice after the heavy tragedy of the main plot.

WebNovelDB Review

10 /10
A literary titan of the genre that balances tragedy and romance with surgical precision.

The Nuance: The novel uses a complex flashback structure. It doesn't just tell you what happened; it makes you feel the loss of innocence as the "present" world is haunted by the scars of the "past."

The Romance: Lan Wangji is the ultimate "Kuudere." His character development is subtle—conveyed through tiny gestures, glances, and the tragedy of what he didn't say in the first life.

The Complexity: There are no pure villains (except one). Every antagonist has a motivation rooted in the flaws of the cultivation society, making the "Big Bad" reveals feel tragic rather than just triumphant.

Reader Archetype: You love complex, non-linear storytelling. You enjoy "Gray Morality" and protagonists who sacrifice everything for their principles. You are here for a romance that is built on mutual respect and shared trauma.

Not For You If: You struggle with many Chinese names (characters often have 3 names: Birth, Common, and Title). If you dislike "Slow Burn" romance where the leads don't confess until the final 10% of the book, the wait might be tough.

Note on Versions: This story has been adapted into a Donghua (The Founder of Diabolism), a Live Action (The Untamed), and a Manhua. The novel is the only version with the full, explicit romance.
