Synopsis

With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs in our ears?

Waking up to face a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world. He discovers a realm filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, difference engines, as well as potions, divination, hexes, tarot cards, and sealed artefacts.

The Light continues to shine, but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he becomes entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—whilst he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions. Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool.”

Editor's Note

💡 This is widely considered the "Gold Standard" of web fiction. The world-building is incredibly dense, and the power system is the most unique and balanced in the medium. It’s a slow-burn masterpiece that rewards patient readers with mind-blowing reveals. If you haven't read LotM, you haven't seen the full potential of web novels.

Experience Curve

Ch. 1–100 (The World-Building Slog): ⭐⭐⭐ – The Filter. This is where most people drop it. It feels like a Victorian slice-of-life novel with heavy info-dumps on the economy, coinage, and daily bread. However, it is essential for the "Lovecraftian" atmosphere and laying the groundwork for the future.

Ch. 101–213 (Volume 1 Finale): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Hook. The pacing accelerates. The mystery of the Antigonus family and the "Clown" arc lead to one of the most emotional and shocking endings in web novel history. If you reach the end of Vol. 1, you are likely hooked for life.

Ch. 214–700 (Sherlock Moriarty & Gehrman Sparrow): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Peak Progression. Klein moves to Backlund. The world expands exponentially. The Tarot Club gatherings become the highlight of every week. The power system (Beyonder Pathways) becomes clear, and the "investigative mystery" vibe is at its best.

Ch. 701–1200 (The High-Tier Chess Game): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Complexity Overload. The stakes move from street-level investigations to global conspiracies and battles between demigods. It requires focus because every detail from Chapter 50 might suddenly become a major plot point.

Ch. 1201–1432 (The Final Ascent): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Mind-Blower. The truth of the world is revealed. The battle against Amon (the "God of Mischief") is legendary for its psychological tension. The ending is bittersweet and perfectly sets up the sequel, Circle of Inevitability.

WebNovelDB Review

10 /10
Lord of the Mysteries is a flawless 10/10. It transcends the usual tropes of the genre by offering a Lovecraftian horror atmosphere combined with a Victorian Steampunk aesthetic. The protagonist, Klein Moretti, is brilliant, cautious, and deeply human.

The core of the novel’s genius lies in its Beyonder System—a path of 22 sequences that leads to godhood, where every gain comes at the risk of losing one’s sanity. The plot is a giant jigsaw puzzle where every minor detail in Chapter 10 becomes a world-shattering revelation in Chapter 1000. While the first volume starts slowly to establish the world, the payoff is unparalleled in the history of web fiction.

For Fans Of: Deep world-building, Lovecraftian horror, complex power systems, and "Mastermind" protagonists.

Not For You If: You want a "fast-food" cultivation novel with instant power-ups or if you dislike slow-burn narratives.
