Overlord (WN) is a popular novel that blends Action, Adventure, Comedy and more. Written by the author Maruyama Kugane. 129 chapters have been translated, and translation of other chapters is in progress.

Synopsis

The story begins with the last day of Yggdrasil, a popular online game which is being quietly shut down. Our protagonist Momonga decides to stay in his beloved game until the last moment, so waits for the forced logout. Unexpectedly, the server does not shut down and Momonga is stuck in a skeleton avatar in another world. “The powerful Overlord” needs now to discover the new world and face the continuous challenges that arise.
Having no parents, friends, or place in society, this ordinary man decides to take over the new world the game has become.

💀 System Interface: The “Alpha Draft” Protocol

Overlord (Web Novel) is the original, unpolished version of the global hit series by Kugane Maruyama. While the core premise remains the same—a salaryman named Momonga is trapped in his skeleton avatar within a new world alongside the NPCs of the Great Tomb of Nazarick—the WN functions as a “What If?” or “Rough Draft” compared to the Light Novel (LN) and anime.

It is a darker, more experimental, and often more controversial version of the story where certain fan-favorite elements are entirely absent.

Component Classification Tactical Implication
Missing Personnel Structural Void Albedo and Mare do not exist. The lack of Albedo drastically changes the social dynamic of Nazarick.
Ainz’s Persona Unstable Overlord Ainz is more impulsive and “human” at the start, making mistakes and revealing his identity far earlier.
Narrative Speed High Velocity The plot moves significantly faster, covering major events in fewer chapters than the verbose LN.
Translation Quality Variable / Raw The WN translation is often unpolished, reflecting the “raw” nature of the original forum posts.

📂 System Interface: The Status Window (Momonga)

Attribute Classification Description
Mercy Level Higher (Initial) Initially shows more human empathy but can flip into brutal hypocrisy without warning.
Strategy High Profile In the WN, he is less concerned with being “low-key” and more willing to show his power to the world.
Political Status Subordinate (Later) In a major plot divergence, Ainz actually subordinates himself to the Empire as a noble, a move that divides fans.
Social Life Loner Without Albedo’s constant presence, Ainz spends more time acting alone or interacting with the Pleiades.

Editor's Note

💡 WN vs. LN Divergence
For fans transitioning from the anime or LN, the WN offers several "shock" deviations:

The Shalltear Incident. The resolution of the Shalltear rebellion follows a different path, leading to different consequences for the world.

Vampire Brain. In a dark twist, Brain Unglaus is turned into a vampire and becomes a subordinate of Nazarick.

Momon's Identity. Narberal Gamma takes on the role of the adventurer "Momon" by herself in some arcs, rather than Ainz doing it.

The Tone. The WN features more "18+" descriptive content (specifically involving Shalltear and Yuri Alpha) that was toned down or removed for the professional LN publication.

*129 chapters of raw Overlord, missing NPCs, and a Ainz who makes mistakes. Incomplete — and essential only for completionists.*

Experience Curve

Ch. 1–20 (The Arrival): ⭐⭐⭐ – The Prototype. Very similar to the LN but feels faster and "rougher" around the edges.

Ch. 21–50 (The Divergence): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Hook. The story begins to veer off. The lack of Albedo starts to change how Nazarick interacts with the Kingdom.

Ch. 51–100 (The Imperial Arc): ⭐⭐⭐ – The Conflict. Features the controversial "Subordination" plotline. This is where most readers either love the realism or hate the "wussy" Ainz.

Ch. 101–129 (The Stagnation): ⭐⭐ – The End. As the author shifted focus to the professional LN, the WN becomes sporadic and eventually stops.

WebNovelDB Review

7 /10
An essential historical document for Overlord completionists, but potentially frustrating for casual fans.

Polish: 4/10. It is a rough draft. Expect plot holes, inconsistent character logic, and translation errors.

Pacing: 9/10. If you find the LN too wordy, the WN gets to the "good parts" (explosive magic and world domination) much faster.

Character Depth: 6/10. Without the LN's expanded cast, Nazarick feels "empty" to some, while others enjoy the focus on the original NPCs.

Originality: 8/10. Seeing the "True Route" where Ainz isn't a perfect 4D-chess master is a refreshing, if jarring, experience.

The Good: Provides "behind-the-scenes" logic for certain LN events. It’s a leaner, meaner version of the story without the "noisy" romantic comedy of Albedo.

The Bad: The lack of Mare and Albedo is a dealbreaker for many. Ainz’s decision to become a subordinate to a human empire is widely hated by the "Supreme Being" purists.

The Archetype: The "Director's Cut." It’s the raw vision before editors smoothed out the edges to make it a commercial success.

The Final Verdict: Read it if you've finished the LN and are starving for "More Overlord." Skip it if you want a cohesive, high-quality literary experience.

Version Note: This is the Web Novel (WN) — the rough draft. If you want the definitive Overlord experience, read the Light Novel (LN) or watch the anime. This is for completionists only.
