Little Mushroom is a popular novel that blends Drama, Psychological, Romance and more. Written by the author Yi Shi Si Zhou. A total of 89 chapters have been translated and the novel is complete.

Synopsis

“Until the day humanity falls.”
In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.
In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.
An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.
But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

Editor's Note

💡 The Science Fiction Core. This is not just a romance; it won the Chinese Nebula Award. The "science" (magnetic fields, genetic fusion) is surprisingly well-researched and central to the plot, rather than being mere window dressing.

The Romance Style. The relationship between An Zhe and Lu Feng is a slow-burn built on "teasing, terror, and empathy." It focuses on the clash between Lu Feng’s duty to kill xenogenics and An Zhe’s nature as a harmless, sentient "alien."

The Sacrifice. A recurring theme is what humans are willing to throw away (their humanity, their emotions, their lives) just to ensure the species survives "one more day."

*89 chapters of mushrooms, massacres, and a love story that will destroy you. Complete — and ready to make you ugly cry.*

Experience Curve

Ch. 1–20 (The Abyss to the Base): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Arrival. Introduces the terrifying world and the tension of An Zhe trying to pass as human under Lu Feng's gaze.

Ch. 21–60 (Life in the Base): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Heart. Deep exploration of the Judge system and the "Trial" mechanics. Emotional bonds begin to form amidst massacres and mutations.

Ch. 61–84 (The Fall & Resolution): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Climax. High-concept sci-fi reveals. The scale shifts from personal survival to the fate of the magnetic poles and humanity.

Extras (The Aftermath): ⭐⭐⭐ – The HE. Provides much-needed relief after the heavy ending, though some fans still crave more "slice-of-life" content.

WebNovelDB Review

9 /10
A masterpiece of the genre that balances a "weak" MC with a massive, crushing world-building.

Writing Quality: 10/10. Poetic, evocative, and haunting. The translation (especially by Alexpt) is highly praised.

Character Design: 9/10. Lu Feng is one of the most complex "cold" MLs in web fiction, and An Zhe is uniquely non-human.

Plot/World-Building: 9.5/10. Unique "Gene Pollution" mechanic and a logical, scientific apocalypse.

Emotional Impact: Extreme. Prepare for "ugly bawling."

The Good: Unlike many novels, the ending is believable and satisfying despite the overwhelming despair of the setting. It tackles heavy moral questions (Is it okay to kill the many to save the few?) without giving easy answers.

The Bad: Some readers may find the "gong-shou" (Top/Bottom) dynamic a bit stereotypical in the later chapters, where the MC becomes more of a "doormat" for the ML's suffering.

For Fans Of: The Last Unicorn, The Road, Mist, Thrive in Catastrophe.

Not For You If: You want a lighthearted story, an OP protagonist who fights everyone, or if you are triggered by mass death and "hopeless" atmospheres.

Ending Note: The story has a satisfying, believable conclusion, but it's heavy. Prepare for existential dread. The extras provide a lighter epilogue for those who need comfort after the main story.

Verdict: Little Mushroom is "The Gold Standard of Sci-Fi Danmei." It is a mandatory read for anyone who wants a story that will make them think and cry in equal measure.
