Synopsis

Karnak, a human born as an illegitimate child in a fallen aristocratic family, rose to the transcendent rank and became the Death King. Even god couldn’t contend with him.

However, after becoming transcendent, he missed his human emotions, such as satisfaction and other things.

So, with his oldest friend and second-in-command, who shared his belief, he decided to return in time with Barros and start over.

However, something seemed wrong with this timeline.

Now is the beginning of the new adventure of the Death King Karnak.

Editor's Note

💡 Unlike many regression novels where the hero returns to "save the world," Karnak and his loyal companion Baros return for a much more selfish reason: they were bored. After becoming god-like liches, they realized that being a Monarch of Death means no longer being able to eat, feel, or enjoy anything. It’s a very unconventional "redemption" journey, fueled by sharp sarcasm and a hilarious duo dynamic. It's a buddy-cop story where the cops are former god-liches on a quest to feel alive again, and their idea of 'community service' often involves terrifyingly powerful necromancy.

Experience Curve

Ch. 1–50 (The Return to Flesh): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Hook. The contrast between their former divine power and their new "weak" human bodies is a constant source of comedy. The scene where they cry with joy while eating at a tavern perfectly defines the tone.

Ch. 51–200 (The Butterfly Effect): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Expansion. Karnak realizes his regression has caused anomalies: others are practicing necromancy when he was supposed to be the only one. The plot thickens with a real mystery surrounding the timeline.

Ch. 201–434 (The Fate of the Monarch): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Conclusion. The novel remains relatively short for the genre and well-paced, avoiding unnecessary filler to focus on resolving the temporal mystery and the final confrontation.

WebNovelDB Review

9 /10
An excellent blend of comedy, dark fantasy, and a philosophical look at what defines humanity. The Good: The Karnak & Baros Dynamic. They aren't just master and servant; they are two old friends who know each other perfectly. Their dialogue is packed with sarcasm, references to their past lives as tyrants, and a completely warped worldview (they try to be "good" but don't really know how). The Bad: Initial Morality. Some readers may be put off by the prologue. Karnak was a true monster in his previous life. While he seeks to become a better person, his past is pitch black, and the dark humor won't appeal to everyone. For Fans Of: Overlord (for the Necromancer aspect), Solo Leveling, Return of the Crazy Demon (for the madness and humor), and classic buddy comedies. Not For You If: You want a purely heroic and moral lead, or if you dislike gory scenes described with a lighthearted tone.

Key Information

Main Characters: Karnak: The former Monarch of Death. A genius of black magic rediscovering simple pleasures (like taste) while navigating a human society whose rules he has long forgotten; Baros: His second-in-command and best friend. A sarcastic warrior who never hesitates to put Karnak in his place. He is the comedic heart of the duo.
Power System: Necromancy & Aura: Karnak possesses the knowledge of transcendent spells but must deal with a body that cannot yet support them. He must relearn how to balance his magic without turning back into a senseless lich.
Themes: Loss of humanity in the pursuit of power, the value of emotions, camaraderie, and the unintended consequences of time travel.
