Imperial God Emperor is a classic example of a story that outgrows its author. The first 400-500 chapters are genuinely fantastic.

The protagonist is likable, the "Academy" arc is engaging, and the mystery surrounding his father is well-paced. The translation quality is notably high, which makes the early immersion easy. However, the "Mixed Review" status on most platforms is justified. The middle and late stages of the novel introduce a jarring shift toward science fiction and "Earth tech" that feels out of place in a traditional cultivation world. Furthermore, a specific female antagonist (the childhood sweetheart) is kept relevant through forced plot devices long after she should have been defeated, which becomes a major point of frustration for readers. The ending is widely considered "rushed" and "nonsensical," leaving many plot threads hanging or resolved in unsatisfying ways.
