Synopsis

I became a staff officer of an empire whose defeat was certain.
The only way to escape from the empire with an 8-year mandatory service was through dishonorable discharge.
But then…
“You can be glad, Lieutenant. Thanks to your accurate instinct, our military could prevent damage in advance.”
The more I struggled to be discharged, the higher my performance evaluation became.

Editor's Note

💡 Think Youjo Senki (Saga of Tanya the Evil) but with 100% more luck and 0% of the existential dread. The MC isn't a tactical genius; he’s a man desperately trying to get fired, only for the universe to interpret his sabotage as "5D Chess." It’s "The Overlord Effect" applied to a World War II-esque setting. If you want a serious military drama, skip this. If you want a "so bad it's good" comedy of errors, you’ve found a gem.

Experience Curve

Ch. 1–100 (The Defector's Dream): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Peak of Comedy. The "Failing Upwards" gimmick is at its funniest. The MC’s attempts to ruin his reputation miraculously lead to massive victories and promotions he never wanted.

Ch. 101–300 (The Hero's Burden): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Reputation War. The MC accepts he can't flee and starts using his "Demon Commander" reputation to dismantle enemies. The stakes rise as he enters the world of high politics and assassination attempts.

Ch. 301–374 (The Final Discharge): ⭐⭐⭐ – The Conclusion. Covers the end of the war and the side stories. It provides a solid wrap-up, though the resolution of the harem elements feels a bit fast for some.

WebNovelDB Review

7 /10
A hilarious exercise in "Reverse Luck" that thrives on its own absurdity.

The Good: The Snowball Effect. The way misunderstandings layer on top of each other is masterful. Allies think he’s a god-like strategist; enemies think he’s a bloodthirsty demon; and the MC just wants to open a bakery. The "Holy Roman Empire vs. The World" aesthetic is a refreshing backdrop.

The "Luck" Mechanic: This isn't just luck; it's "Minus x Minus = Plus." The MC makes a terrible decision, the enemy makes an equally unconventional counter-move, and they collide in a way that makes the MC look like a prophet.

The Trade-Off: Repetitive Formula. Every arc follows a strict pattern: Problem → MC tries to fail → MC accidentally saves the day → Promotion. If you don't enjoy the "Sasuga Steiner-sama" trope, you will find this boring by chapter 50.

For Fans Of: Overlord (Ainz's luck), The Eminence in Shadow, Youjo Senki, and "Failing Upwards" comedies.

Not For You If: You want realistic military tactics, logistics, or a protagonist with high moral standards. Daniel Steiner is a selfish guy who would happily let the empire burn if it meant he could retire early.

Key Information

Main Characters: Daniel Steiner (MC): A reincarnated man who knows the Empire is doomed. His only goal is a dishonorable discharge. He is intelligent and competent, but his extreme selfishness is the engine of the comedy.
Power System: Reverse Luck / Misunderstanding: Not a magical system per se, but a narrative force. The MC's reputation acts as a "debuff" to enemies (who overthink his simple moves) and a "buff" to allies (who find hidden meaning in his nonsense).
Themes: The Illusion of Competence: Exploring how public perception can force an individual into a role they never wanted, and how "destiny" can be forged through pure coincidence.
