Duke Pendragon features one of the strongest openings in the "Regression" genre. The contrast between Raven Valt—a scarred, cynical veteran—and the frail body of the noble Alan Pendragon is compelling. The bond with Soldrake, the White Dragon, is epic in scale, and the combat scenes are described with a satisfying, visceral brutality. The score is weighed down, however, by poorly executed romance and female character development. What begins as a high-stakes political and military epic frequently stumbles into "wish-fulfillment" territory. Promising female leads are often reduced to bickering for the MC's attention, which can frustrate readers looking for a consistent, dark atmosphere. Despite these flaws, the overarching mystery of the "beings in the shadows" and the sheer power of the dragon-human bond make it a worthwhile read for fans of the genre who don't mind a heavy dose of harem tropes.
