Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Hajime Nagumo is your average, everyday otaku. However, his simple life of pulling all-nighters and sleeping in school is suddenly turned upside down when he, along with the rest of his class, is summoned to a fantasy world!
They’re treated like heroes and tasked with the duty of saving the human race from utter extinction.
But what should have been any otaku’s wet dream quickly turns into Hajime’s nightmare? While the rest of his class are blessed with godlike powers, Hajime’s job, Synergist, only has a single transmutation skill. Ridiculed and bullied by his classmates for being weak, he soon finds himself in despair.
Will he be able to survive in this dangerous world of monsters and demons with only a glorified blacksmith’s level of strength?

Editor's Note

⚠️ The Great Bait-and-Switch. Arifureta is the ultimate "Tale of Two Novels." Volume 1 is a gritty, high-stakes survival horror about a weakling eating monsters to survive. Volume 2 onwards is a "Rule of Cool" harem rom-com featuring a motorcycle-riding, dual-pistol-wielding chuunibyou. If you go in expecting The Road, you’re going to be very confused when it turns into Fast & Furious: Isekai Drift.

Edgy or Misunderstood? Hajime Nagumo is the patron saint of "dark" protagonists. He wears a leather coat, has a prosthetic arm, and says things like "I'll kill anyone who gets in my way." However, critics often point out a massive cognitive dissonance: he says he’s heartless, but he constantly saves people like a typical shonen hero.

The Gun-Nut Fantasy. For readers who love technical details, the way Hajime uses "Transmutation" to build railguns, drones, and SUVs in a world of swords and sorcery is pure wish-fulfillment gold. It's not "realistic," but it is undeniably fun.

A Harem with a Choice. Unlike many generic stories, Hajime actually picks a "Main Girl" (Yue) early on and sticks to her. The other girls follow him, and the dynamic becomes a mix of genuine loyalty and slapstick comedy (looking at you, Tio).

A completed main story with a massive "After Story" that is actually longer than the original work. It’s the definitive "zero-to-hero" template that spawned a thousand clones.

Experience Curve

The Abyss (Vol 1): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Peak. Gritty, dark, and visceral. The psychological breakdown and rebirth of Hajime are genuinely compelling.

The Reunion (Vol 2-4): ⭐⭐⭐ – The Tonal Shift. The story becomes much lighter. The introduction of Shia (Bunny girl) and Tio (Perverted dragon) marks the transition into full-blown harem antics.

The Hero Party Confrontation: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Face-Slap. There is immense satisfaction in watching Hajime—the "failure"—completely eclipse his "Hero" classmates who once bullied him.

The After Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Real Meat. Many fans argue the After Story is better than the main plot. It explores "what happens after they go home" with surprisingly deep world-building and character growth.

WebNovelDB Review

7 /10
6.8/10 (Main Story) | 8.5/10 (After Story)
It is a "guilty pleasure" masterpiece. It’s not "high literature," but it hits the dopamine buttons for power progression and revenge perfectly.

World Building: 6/10. The Seven Great Labyrinths are a cool concept, but the "surface world" feels like a generic template for Hajime to show off his gadgets.

Character Development: 5/10. Hajime’s "growth" is mostly just him getting cooler and edgier. The side characters (classmates) are often one-dimensional "brain-dead" obstacles.

Action/Combat: 8/10. The author is great at describing high-octane, tech-vs-magic battles. If you like "tactical" i.e. shooting a dragon in the eye with a sniper rifle, you’ll love this.

The "Cringe" Factor: High. This novel is the definition of "Chuunibyou." You have to embrace the cringe to enjoy the ride.

The Good: The sense of progression is top-tier. Seeing a "Blacksmith" job beat "Gods" through sheer engineering and monster-eating is a great hook. The After Story is an absolute treat for those who want to see characters live their lives post-climax.

The Bad: The tonal whiplash after the first dungeon is severe. The humor (specifically Tio's masochism) can be repetitive and off-putting for some readers.

The Archetype: The Self-Made Monster. He wasn't born with a 10x reward system or a divine sword; he literally crawled out of hell through spite and science.

The Final Verdict: Read Arifureta if you want an overpowered MC who doesn't take crap from anyone and likes building cool gear. Skip it if you want a consistent, dark psychological drama—because this story stops being "dark" the second Hajime sees sunlight again.
