Fallen Monarch is a popular novel that blends Action, Adventure, Fantasy and more. Written by the author I.C. Han. A total of 161 chapters have been translated and the novel is complete.

Synopsis

The Demon Lord, humanity’s greatest enemy. Every few decades one rises to power, threatening the human realm and all who inhabit it. To stand against the Demon Lord and its armies, humanity relies on Heroes who are sent forth to face the unfaceable.
Thoma was one such Hero, though he defeated his generation’s Demon Lord over 20 years ago. Now, he is but a simple monk living in a remote abbey in the mountains of the Holy Kingdom, where he cares for abandoned children and orphans of war. Though his life has been peaceful for a long time now, things are changing. Times are getting tougher and the abbey is struggling to make ends meet. Thoma knows the future is uncertain, yet he continues to struggle toward a better tomorrow.
Will he succeed, or will the past he left behind finally catch up to him?

Editor's Note

⚠️ The "Patience" Test. This novel is famous (or infamous) for its prologue. While most web novels get to the "action" by chapter three, Fallen Monarch spends the first 21 chapters putting the protagonist through a meat grinder of helplessness, betrayal, and suffering. If you can survive the initial frustration of watching a legendary hero get treated like a doormat, you are rewarded with one of the most unique "Dark Hero" stories in the Korean catalog.

The Fall and Rise. Thoma isn't a fresh-faced teenager; he’s a veteran hero who settled into a peaceful life as a monk, only to have his worldview shattered. The "Fall" in the title is literal—he must embrace the powers of death and ancient "devils" to cleanse a world that has been rotted from the inside by the very "Holy Church" he once served.

Political Grit. Unlike standard power-fantasy stories, this novel leans heavily into political intrigue and the corruption of power. It’s a slow-burn revenge story where the MC doesn't just want to kill his enemies; he wants to replace the entire system they built.

161 chapters (Completed). A compact, high-impact journey from the heights of heroism to the depths of demonic vengeance.

Experience Curve

Ch. 1–21 (The Suffering): ⭐ – The Filter. This part is brutal. The MC is poisoned, tortured, and his orphanage is destroyed while he remains passive. Many readers drop the novel here, but this "low point" is essential to justify his later transformation.

Ch. 22–100 (The Resurgence): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Rampage. The story shifts gears into high-octane revenge and kingdom building. The MC begins to use his "Death and Holiness" powers to systematically dismantle the corrupt hierarchy.

Ch. 101–161 (The Endgame): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Reveal. The stakes expand to a cosmic level. While some feel the final antagonist "overstays their welcome," the ending and epilogue are widely praised for providing a "feel-good" and emotionally resonant conclusion.

WebNovelDB Review

8 /10
A masterclass in "delayed gratification." It’s a darker, more mature take on the Hero-turned-Demon-Lord trope that avoids many of the shallow "edgelord" cliches found in shorter works.

Character Depth: 9/10. Thoma’s transition from a naive monk back into a warrior (and eventually something more) is well-handled. Even the side characters feel like real people with deep histories, not just fodder for the MC's growth.

World Building: 8.5/10. The author creates a believable "Holy Kingdom" that feels genuinely oppressive. The contrast between the "Light" (which is corrupt) and the "Dark" (which is Thoma's path to justice) is the core philosophical conflict.

Antagonist: 7/10. The Pope is a "love to hate" character—pure, unadulterated evil. While effective, some readers find his survival through his drug-induced haze to be a bit of a plot convenience.

Emotional Weight: 9/10. The tragedy is real, and the triumphs feel earned because the cost of failure was shown so vividly in the prologue.

The Good: Incredible world-building; emotional payoff that justifies the early misery; "completed" status means a satisfying, non-rushed ending; deep political layers.

The Bad: The first 20 chapters are genuinely hard to sit through; the MC's initial passivity can be infuriating; some late-game plot holes are plugged only at the very end.

The Archetype: "The Reluctant Purifier." He didn't want to be a monster, but in a world where the "Saints" are the true devils, he accepts the mantle of the Monarch to bring about a true dawn.
