Synopsis

Year 2056, in a city in the Yuan Jiang Su Jin area. On top of a ruined, shattered six story residential apartment sits a teenager wearing a combat vest, militaristic trousers, and alloyed battle boots. On his back is a hexagonal shield and equipped is a blood-shadow battle knife. He sits there silently on the edge of the roof. At this time, the sparkling sky was shining and there was a refreshing breath within the air that blew towards him. However, there was only silence within the ruined, deserted city, with an occasional howl that makes your heart skip a beat.

Editor's Note

⚠️ The Identity Crisis. If you’re coming for a gritty, post-apocalyptic Spec-Ops vibe, you’ll be thrilled for the first 200 chapters. After that? Hope you like spaceships and "Super Saiyan" logic, because IET (the author) completely abandons the grounded Earth setting for a generic "unlimited universe" grind.

The "One-Man Army" Trap. Luo Feng starts as a relatable, hardworking guy trying to support his disabled brother. But the author can't help himself—the power creep hits a vertical incline. Eventually, the threats that felt terrifying on Earth become literal cannon fodder.

The Romance Flatline. As is tradition for this author, the romance is basically a checkbox. Luo Feng has a wife because the plot says he should, but she has the personality of a cardboard cutout and spends 90% of the novel being "occasionally mentioned."

Patriotism Overload. Look, it’s a Chinese novel, we get it. But the "China is the pinnacle of humanity" theme in the early arcs is laid on pretty thick. If that makes you roll your eyes, be prepared to do some ocular gymnastics.

1486 chapters that start as a tactical monster-slayer and end as a galactic spreadsheet. It’s the ultimate example of a story outgrowing its own premise.

Experience Curve

Vol. 1–5 (The Golden Era): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Hook. Post-apocalyptic Earth, tactical squad fights, and a manageable power scale. This is peak Swallowed Star.

Vol. 6–15 (The Transition): ⭐⭐⭐ – The Shift. The moment the MC leaves Earth, the "science" in sci-fi gets replaced by "magic with laser beams." The world-building expands, but the soul starts to leak out.

Vol. 16–32 (The Infinite Grind): ⭐⭐ – The Slog. Welcome to the MMO simulator. Luo Feng grinds for resources, hits a new level, finds out that level is actually "low tier" in the next galaxy, and repeats. The scale becomes so large that numbers lose all meaning.

WebNovelDB Review

7 /10
A masterpiece of the "modern xianxia" subgenre that unfortunately falls victim to its own success and bloated length.

Action/Combat: 8/10. IET knows how to make your blood boil. The fights are fast-paced and, thankfully, don't drag on for 50 chapters like Martial God Asura.

World-Building: 5/10. It’s wide, but shallow. The author builds a massive universe just to tell you everything in it is "cannon fodder" compared to the next big thing.

Protagonist: 6/10. Luo Feng is a badass, but he’s a lucky one. The "struggle" feels artificial when a new "Ancient Inheritance" or "Secret AI" falls into his lap every time he hits a wall.

Pacing: 4/10. The beginning is a slow, methodical climb. The middle is an exponential explosion. The end is a repetitive cycle of tournaments and auctions.

The Good: The combination of futuristic tech (AI, jetfighters, alloyed blades) with traditional cultivation is legitimately cool. Seeing a "Wargod" level fighter move at Mach speed is a great mental image.

The Bad: The "moving goalposts." It’s frustrating to watch the MC work hard to reach a peak, only for the author to reveal there are 50 more peaks behind it. It makes the previous Swallowed Star chapters feel like a waste of time.

The Archetype: The "Relentless Grinder." He doesn't have a life; he has a training schedule.

The Final Verdict: Read Swallowed Star if you want to see how a "modern" cultivation story handles a galactic scale. Just stop reading once they leave the solar system if you want to keep your fond memories of the story intact. It starts as a 5-star survival horror and ends as a 2-star space opera.
