Rescue the Beautiful, Strong and Miserable Male Protagonist is a popular novel that blends Action, Adventure, Fantasy and more. Written by the author 攀月亮. A total of 145 chapters have been translated and the novel is complete.

Synopsis

After death, Mi Lu learned that he had been living inside a book, not even as a supporting character but just a minor, expendable extra who appeared a few times.
The main character is a young man named Hu Lü Yan, originally the eldest son of the Hu Lü family, one of the four great families in the cultivation world. Born with a silver spoon, his life was supposed to be glorious, but he was sent away as a baby.
Hu Lü Yan grew up enduring humiliation and hardships.
Suddenly one day, the Hu Lü family found him and took him back. He thought he would return to his position as the eldest son, but instead, he was placed on a sacrificial altar…
In the cultivation world, there is a saying that the Hu Lü family members have a special constitution. By sacrificing them and using parts like their hands, eyes, and tongues as medicinal catalysts, several powerful beings can be saved.
And Hu Lü Yan was such a catalyst.

Mi Lu’s soul drifted for hundreds of years, watching helplessly as Hu Lü Yan killed all those who used him as a medicinal catalyst, ultimately perishing in a burst of blood.
When he opened his eyes again, he found himself back in the year he was gravely ill, and unknowingly, his mother had fed him soup made with Hu Lü Yan’s heart as a catalyst.
The revived Mi Lu went to the abyss to find Hu Lü Yan, now with crippled hands, blinded eyes, and mute.
Hu Lü Yan was on the brink of death; upon hearing a voice, his empty eyes turned toward Mi Lu.
Blood poured from his eyes.
His face was blank.
“Hu Lü Yan,” Mi Lu squatted down, caressing his face, “I’ll take you with me.”
Reader’s Note:
1. Set in ancient times, please don’t criticize the moral setting.
2. The top character’s life is genuinely tragic, and he is genuinely mad, but all his actions are for revenge, and he does not harm the innocent (improves later).
3. The bottom character is not a saint.

Editor's Note

💡 The Catalyst and the Cannon Fodder. Imagine waking up and realizing your mother just fed you a "healing soup" made from the literal heart of the world's most dangerous protagonist. That is the horrific starting line for Mi Lu. He isn't a hero or a saint; he’s a tired soul who has watched the world burn ten times over. This isn't just a rescue mission—it’s a desperate attempt to stop a cycle of mutual destruction before the "medicine" becomes the monster.

A Masterclass in "Strong, Beautiful, and Miserable." Hu Lü Yan is the embodiment of the "tragic ML" trope pushed to its absolute, agonizing limit. When Mi Lu finds him, he isn't just "sad"—he is mutilated, mute, and blinded. The early chapters are heavy and visceral, focusing on the slow, painful process of physical and emotional reclamation. This isn't a story where a hug fixes everything; it’s a story where healing takes years, comas, and a lot of blood.

The "Green Flag" Covered in Blood. Despite his yandere tendencies and his capacity for world-ending violence, Hu Lü Yan’s devotion to Mi Lu is surprisingly tender. He is terrified of scaring the only person who looked at his empty eye sockets and didn't turn away. It’s a complex, high-tension romance where the "Bottom" (Mi Lu) is the emotional anchor for a "Top" (Hu Lü Yan) who is one bad day away from resetting the world.

“Hu Lü Yan,” Mi Lu squatted down, caressing his face, “I’ll take you with me.”

117 Chapters + 28 Extras (Completed). A beautifully dark, slow-burn Danmei that balances extreme angst with a deeply earned Happy Ending.

Experience Curve

Ch. 1–30 (The Abyss & Recovery): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Pure Heartbreak. The most intense part of the novel. Mi Lu’s rescue of the mutilated Hu Lü Yan and their initial, fragile bridge of (dis)trust is masterfully written.

Ch. 31–80 (The Journey & Revenge): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The Slow Burn. As Hu Lü Yan grows and begins to reclaim his "catalyst" body parts, the scale of the world expands. The political machinations of the four great families provide a backdrop for his cold, calculated revenge.

Ch. 81–End (The Cycle’s Conclusion): ⭐⭐⭐ – The Bittersweet Peak. The main story ending is slightly open and heavy, but the 28 Extra Chapters are mandatory. They provide the "healing factor" and the definitive Happy Ending the characters (and readers) desperately need.

WebNovelDB Review

8 /10
A hauntingly beautiful tale of trauma and redemption that proves love is most powerful when it’s found at the absolute bottom of the abyss.

Writing Quality: 8/10. The author handles heavy themes (mutilation, suicidal ideation, revenge) with a grounded perspective. It’s emotional without being melodramatic just for the sake of it.

Character Design: 10/10. Mi Lu is a realistic, exhausted transmigrator with no system to help him. Hu Lü Yan is a legendary "miserable" lead—his power to absorb Qi makes him a "bug" in the system, but his heart is what keeps you reading.

World Building: 6/10. The cultivation world is a bit of a backdrop for the character drama. It’s functional but not as expansive as a high-fantasy xianxia.

Pacing: 8/10. It moves steadily. The 4-year time skip (via coma) is used effectively to transition the characters into a more "romance-ready" age while respecting the trauma of their youth.

The Good: The lack of a "System." Mi Lu has to rely on his fading memories and his own empathy. The relationship is earned through blood and shared silence, making the eventual "Happy Ending" feel like a hard-won victory.

The Bad: Extreme angst. If you aren't in the mood for a "sob at 4 AM" type of story, this might be too heavy. Some side characters (like Wan Ji) are intentionally written to be insufferable "creeps" to highlight how differently Mi Lu treats the ML.

For Fans Of: Mistakenly Saving the Villain, The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (for the transmigrator vibes, but much darker), 2ha (Erha).

Not For You If: You have triggers regarding physical mutilation or CSA (briefly mentioned in backstory), or if you want a lighthearted, "fluffy" romance from chapter one.

The Archetype: The "Shattered Mirror." One is broken by a cycle of death; the other is broken by a world of cruelty. Together, they piece back something new.

Verdict: A Must-Read for Angst Connoisseurs. It’s a dark, addictive, and ultimately hopeful story about choosing to live when the world gives you every reason to die.
