Kenkyo, Kenjitsu o Motto ni Ikite Orimasu is a popular novel that blends Comedy, School Life, Shoujo and more. Written by the author Hiyoko no kēki. 235 chapters have been translated, and translation of other chapters is in progress.

Synopsis

It was something that happened while I was waiting for the day of the primary school entrance exam. I realised that I had become one of the characters of a shoujo manga that I loved reading in my old life, ‘You Are My Dolce’.
The role I was assigned was a character who bullied the commoner protagonist and tried to get in the way of her love with a rich boy nicknamed Emperor; a typical villainess rich girl, Kisshouin Reika.
At the end of the story, Reika suffered the Emperor’s retribution and even her family fell into ruin. With the villain gone, the protagonist and the Emperor overcame their trials and became a couple. And they lived happily ever after.
Wait, that’s terrible for meee! The manga ended there, but I have to continue living my life after my family is ruined!
The protagonist can enjoy her romance or love or whatever on her own. I’ll erase my presence so that I don’t anger the Emperor.
Eh-? The story isn’t progressing well because there’s no villain, you say? But I’m busy saving up money and studying so that I can live well after the collapse.

🎭 System Interface: The “Humility” Protocol

The story operates as a slow-burn diary of a girl growing up, moving year-by-year from primary school to high school.

Component Classification Tactical Implication
Narrative Engine Internal Monologue / Satire 90% of the comedy comes from Reika’s snarky, cowardly, and food-focused thoughts contrasting with her elegant outward actions.
Primary Genre Slice-of-Life / Comedy / Shoujo Expect a very relaxed pace. There are no “world-ending” threats, only exam stress and social blunders.
Atmosphere Heartwarming & Nostalgic Captures the feeling of long-term school friendships and the mundane beauty of daily life.
The “X” Factor Real-World “Low Spec” Reika isn’t a genius; she has to study “blood, sweat, and tears” just to stay in the top 30 of her class.

📂 System Interface: The Status Window (Reika’s “Mask”)

The core of the novel is the duality of Reika’s existence:

Attribute Outward “Reika-sama” Inward “Commoner Reika”
Aura Cold, Noble, “Unreachable Flower” Anxious, Cowardly, “Bowl of Yogurt”
Hobby Folding fans, Tea ceremonies Eating junk food, Saving money, Shish-kebab
Social Tactical Uses a fan as a “dangerous weapon” Avoids confrontation at all costs to prevent “The Ruin”
Romance Status Men are too intimidated to approach Desperately lonely and yearning for a “Love Blessing”

💡 The "Addictive Snack" Insight

[The GOAT of Slice-of-Life]: This novel is legendary in the Syosetu (Japanese web novel) rankings, often sitting just below Mushoku Tensei. It’s a "comfort read" that feels like a letter from an old friend.

[The Romance Drought]: Be warned: 300 chapters in, and there is still no confirmed romance for Reika. The author constantly teases potential leads (Enjou, Kaburagi, Akisawa) only to "smack the reader in the face" with a comedic reset.

[The Hiatus Trap]: CRITICAL: The novel has been on hiatus since 2017. You will reach Chapter 299 and be left stranded. However, most fans agree the journey is so delightful that it's still worth reading.

299 chapters of internal monologues, social anxiety, and a heroine who just wants to eat junk food in peace. On Hiatus since 2017 — but the journey is worth the cliffhanger.

Experience Curve

The Suiran Academy Log

Ch. 1–30 (Primary School Realization): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Establishing the "save money and study" plan. Reika is an adorable, anxious child learning to navigate elite society while harboring a commoner's soul.

Ch. 31–70 (The Middle School Social Web): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The introduction of the "Stalker Emperor" and the "Black-Bellied Enjou." The humor peaks as Reika's internal monologues perfectly contrast with her cold Ojou-sama exterior.

Ch. 71–200 (The High School "Dolce" Plot): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – The original manga's plot finally begins. Reika desperately tries to remain a background character but accidentally becomes a legendary figure at Suiran.

Ch. 201–299 (The Eternal Hiatus): ⭐⭐⭐ – A bittersweet phase where character relationships deepen and romantic hints finally emerge, only for the story to halt indefinitely in 2017.

WebNovelDB Review

9 /10
A masterpiece of character writing that unfortunately may never see an ending.

Polish: 10/10. The English translation (by Estelion/Oniichanyamete) is world-class, including cultural notes and food references that enhance the "vibe."

Pacing: Very Slow. It covers every school event. If you want fast-paced action, this will feel like "watching paint dry." If you like immersion, it’s perfect.

Character Depth: 10/10. Every side character has a "hidden face" or a complex backstory that subverts their shoujo manga archetype.

Relatability: 10/10. Reika’s struggles with weight, dieting, studying, and feeling "average" despite her status make her one of the most relatable MCs in fiction.

The Good:
The POV shifts are rare but brilliant. Seeing Reika through the eyes of others—who think she is a majestic, scheming queen while we know she's just thinking about fried chicken—is comedic gold.

The Bad:
Reika can be frustratingly passive. She is a "jellyfish" who avoids confrontation to a fault, which some readers find boring or annoying.

The Archetype:
The Reluctant Aristocrat — a girl who just wants a peaceful, middle-class life but is forced to play the part of a high-society villainess.

Verdict:
Kenkyo Kenjitsu is like a bag of high-quality potato chips: light, addictive, and you'll finish it before you realize it. It’s a "healing" novel for those tired of OP protagonists and toxic drama. Just prepare your heart for the cliffhanger at the end of the hiatus.

Is it worth starting despite the 2017 hiatus?
Absolutely. Even without a conclusion, Reika-sama's daily life is more entertaining than 90% of completed novels. Just don't expect a wedding anytime soon!

Key Information

Main Characters: Kisshouin Reika (The Reincarnated Villainess) — Unlike the typical "OP" or "genius" reincarnators, Reika is a refreshingly normal girl with a "commoner" soul trapped in the body of an elite, high-society Ojou-sama. She is a dedicated glutton who secretly loves ramen and junk food while maintaining a mask of cold, unreachable elegance. Alongside her is Kaburagi Masaya (The Emperor), the original manga's hero who is a socially stunted, stalkerish "alpha" male, and Enjou Shuusuke, his seemingly kind but "black-bellied" (scheming) best friend.
Power System: The "Ojou-sama" Mask & Social Standing. There is no magic or leveling here. The "power" lies in navigating the rigid, high-stakes social hierarchy of the Suiran Academy. Reika’s "ability" is her constant internal monologue—a survivalist’s train of thought that keeps her from triggering the "destruction flags" that would lead to her family's ruin.
Themes: Beyond Slice-of-Life and School Drama, the novel is a masterclass in Perspective & Misunderstanding. It explores the massive gap between how the world sees a "perfect" rich girl and the anxious, food-obsessed, and "humble" reality of her inner mind.
